Shanghai Moon – is 1 of these couple of restaurants whose interior decor alone is worth the trip. And if you go in the middle of the evening you can have the location to yourself. It is open 24-hours a day. From the elevator, stick to the thinning red carpet down the hall and into the ballroom-style dining area, where the carpet springs back to life in a swirl of red, blue and cream. Choose one of the mismatched embroidered chairs and sit down to a quintessential Chinese table, a pink carnation in a glass vase and a red tablecloth. See the majestic and old-fashioned surroundings: the antiques, the chandeliers, the grand ceiling with distinctive molding and alcoves with velvet curtains. On the walls, there are pictures of Shanghai circa 1840s-1950s displaying the every day landmarks of the era (the first division retailer, the 1st cinema, the Huangpu complete of canoe-sized boats) as effectively as landmark events like Prince Chun of the Qing Dynasty’s parade down Nanjing Xi Lu. The menu is full of your common Shanghainese fare, with a bit of Cantonese influence

Tudor Grange Property – off Blossomfield Road, Solihull

I’ve been meaning to get images of this property for a whilst. As it was where Alfred Bird of Bird’s Custard lived.

It is Tudor Grange Residence and it is off a side road off Blossomfield Road in Solihull

It is Grade II* listed.

I wonder if there is anyplace else that you can take it from? Not positive if you can see it from Tudor Grange Park or not.

Tudor Grange Residence and Steady Block – Heritage Gateway

A huge suburban property with attached steady block. It was developed and constructed in 1887 in a loosely Jacobean style by Thomas Henry Mansell of Birmingham for the industrialist Alfred Lovekin with panelling by Plunketts of Smith Street, Warwick. The property is of red stretcher bond brick with ashlar dressings and a tiled roof and has two storeys with attics and basement. The steady block is T-shaped in strategy and attached to the west side of the property.

EXTERIOR: The northern entrance front has a near-symmetrical centrepiece which is recessed at first floor level and above but which has a projecting three-bay porch to the ground floor with door to the proper. At either side are projecting, gabled wings and these and the central bay all have shaped outlines to their gables. The windows to the ground and 1st floors are mullioned and transomed, and there are projecting bay windows to the ground floor at either side. There are panels of carved stonework, especially around the porch, featuring strapwork and grotesque masks. A further bay to the east then joins to the low wall screening a service court and this in turn joins to the steady block. Extending to the west is a single-storey range of two bays added by Sir Alfred Bird with a square bay window and modest, elaborately-carved oriel capped by a battlemented parapet. The garden front is composed with deliberate asymmetry, possessing 5 bays with shaped gables to the left of centre and far proper and a canted and square bay, each and every of two storeys, as effectively as a single-storey bay to the far correct. At the west finish is a low screen wall which connects to the stable block. To the far east is a portion of walling, the southern side of which was formerly inside the conservatory. Attached to this are concrete containers attached to the wall which are moulded in immitation of rock. The skyline on each principal fronts has a quite full array of clustered octagonal chimneys with moulded caps. The balustrade at the prime of the wall has moulded balusters and the balustrade piers are surmounted by statues personifying a range of figures which includes Hercules, Brutus and William the Conqueror some of which have been carved by White’s, according to George Noszlopy, who has identified the overall scheme as primarily based on late C16 and early-C17 English engravings of heroes from Greek mythology, Roman Emperors and characters from English legend, some of which have been added by Sir Alfred Bird who employed Robert Bridgeman.

HISTORY
The opening of the Birmingham-Oxford Railway in 1852 triggered the initial expansion of Solihull’s urban area and all through the later C19 and a lot of the C20, the borough has expanded to turn out to be an affluent commuter suburb of Birmingham. Tudor Grange was constructed for Alfred Lovekin of Adie &amp Lovekin, jewellers and silversmiths in 1887. The firm manufactured a wide variety of silver fancy goods at the finish of the C19 and had a factory in Regent Street, Hockley. In 1894 they commissioned Mansell &amp Mansell to style a new factory for them at 23, Frederick Street, Birmingham which became identified as `Trafalgar Works’ (Grade II).
Lovekin’s wife died in 1900 and in 1901 the property was sold to Alfred Bird, son of the founder of Bird’s Custard Business. He enlarged the home, adding the library and a sizeable conservatory to the east, and had Blossomfield Road moved northwards, away from the entrance front, and constructed a new entrance lodge at the end of the re-configured drive. He also employed Robert Bridgeman to ornament the house with statuary and furnished it with an in depth art collection which integrated paintings and also with panels of C16 and C17 Flemish stained glass, which survive in situ. Alfred Bird became M.P. for Wolverhampton West in 1910. In 1920 he was knighted and in 1922, the year of his death, he was made a baronet. His widow lived on at Tudor Grange until her death in 1943 and the home is believed to have been used as a Red Cross auxiliary hospital throughout and after the Second World War. In 1946 the home was purchased by Warwickshire County Council and became a school for young children with special wants till 1976 when it became element of Solihull Technical College.

Barry Flanagan was born in Prestatyn, North Wales. He studied architecture at Birmingham College of Art and Crafts and soon after spells at different colleges was accepted on the Vocational Diploma in Sculpture at St. Martin’s College of Art in London in 1964. Flanagan graduated in 1966 and taught at St. Martin’s School of Art and the Central School of Arts and Crafts, between 1967 and 1971. In 1991 was elected to the Royal Academy and he received the OBE.

From the outset Flanagan’s operate has been perceived as radical and independent. He revolutionised sculptural material when in 1965 he showed the soft sculpture ‘aaing j gni aa’, 1965 at Greater Books, Charing Cross Road (bought by the Tate Gallery in 1969) performs such as this and ‘4 casb 2 ’67’, 1967 changed suggestions about the language of sculpture forever. Flanagan was interested in ‘pataphysics, Alfred Jarry’s ‘science of imaginary solutions’ and this ethos is evident in the playfulness of his approach, which enables components to uncover their own sculptural form, no matter whether sand, or rope, stone, sheet metal, cloth, clay or bronze. He was incorporated in the show, ‘Between Poetry and Painting’ at the ICA also in 1965 when he contributed a finger poem. His initial solo exhibition was held at the Rowan Gallery, London in 1966. Thereafter he exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions, in Britain and abroad, such as the seminal ‘When Attitudes Became Form’, Bern, ‘Op Losse Schroeven’, Amsterdam both in 1969 and ‘Information’ New York in 1970. His 1st solo exhibition at Waddington Galleries, London was held in 1980.

Flanagan is possibly ideal recognized for his dynamic, frequently monumental, bronze hares, which spring into life and have been 1st exhibited in the early eighties. Flanagan fuses the everyday, the imaginary and fantastical to mould clay into animal forms, hares, elephants, dogs and horses – the horse is an archetype of classical sculpture. When asked about the use of the hare motif Barry would describe the magical knowledge of seeing a hare operating on the Sussex Downs. This event prompted the very first Leaping Hare sculpture in 1979. For the Egyptians the hare represented life. In Chinese mythology the hare is the sole inhabitant of the moon and the symbol of immortality. This mercurial image of the hare has come to stand as surrogate for human existence and our relations to the animal globe.

His return to bronze with the hare, he had cast perform in the foundry at Central School with Henry Abercrombie in 1969, was component of his exploration into distinct media, from the sand, rope and felt pieces, which focused on composition and challenged previous suggestions of what sculpture may constitute, to the ceramics, stone, marble and sheet metal sculptures of the seventies. Several of his operates have humorous titles for instance ‘A Nose in Repose’ 1977/78, collection Tate. He was involved in happenings and dematerialised practices and collaborated with Yoko Ono in 1966 and later in 1980 with the Marjorie Strider dance company. Like his contemporaries from St. Martins, Richard Extended and Bruce McLean, Flanagan experimented with film. He was incorporated in ‘Land Art’, Gerry Schum’s Video Gallery exhibition with the film, ‘A hole in the Sea’ 1969.

The exhibition ‘The horses of San Marco’ at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, in 1979 made a deep impression on Flanagan. Henry Abercrombie described the exhibition’s effect on Flanagan’s pondering and approach to sculpture, where the sheer tactile physicality of the ancient modeled horses designed an aura and majesty. It was the ancientness of the sculptures that demonstrated man’s relation with the animal as much as the want and signifies to represent it. The varied patinas and gilding also offered substantial material to investigate the properties of bronze and the catalogue included essays on ancient casting techniques, gilding in the Greek and Roman eras and an investigation of the foundry tactics used to cast the horses of San Marco as effectively as analyses of the very best ways to preserve the horses. The bronze sculptures of horses every have a distinctly different character for instance the gorgeous majestic and strong ‘Horse’, 1983 at Jesus College, Cambridge to the gentle diffidence of ‘Field Day’, 1986, also identified as the ‘Korus Horse’ in San Eulalia, Ibiza and the mysterious, mythological qualities of the ‘Unicorn and Oak Tree’, 1991.

Flanagan represented Britain at the Venice Biennale in 1982. A key retrospective of his work was held at the Fundacion ‘La Caixa’ Madrid in 1993, touring to the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Nantes in 1994. Flanagan’s bronze hares have also been exhibited in many outside spaces, most notably on Park Avenue in New York in 1995-six and at Grant Park, Chicago in 1996. In 1999, he had a solo exhibition at Galerie Xavier Hufkens in Brussels followed by an exhibition at Tate, Liverpool (2000). In 2002, a significant exhibition of his perform was shown at the Kunsthalle Recklinghausen, Germany, and toured to the Musee d’Art Moderne et d’Art Contemporain, Good. In 2006, the Irish Museum of Modern day Art in Dublin held a main retrospective of his function, in association with Dublin City Art Gallery The Hugh Lane, which incorporated ten huge-scale bronzes installed along O’Connell Street and in Parnell Square. His function is held in public collections worldwide like the MOMA in New York, Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and Tate in London. In 2011 Tate presented Barry Flanagan Early Operates 1965 – 1982.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art‘s permanent collection includes more than two million functions of art from about the planet. It opened its doors on February 20, 1872, housed in a building located at 681 Fifth Avenue in New York City. Beneath their guidance of John Taylor Johnston and George Palmer Putnam, the Met’s holdings, initially consisting of a Roman stone sarcophagus and 174 largely European paintings, rapidly outgrew the offered space. In 1873, occasioned by the Met’s buy of the Cesnola Collection of Cypriot antiquities, the museum decamped from Fifth Avenue and took up residence at the Douglas Mansion on West 14th Street. Nonetheless, these new accommodations have been short-term following negotiations with the city of New York, the Met acquired land on the east side of Central Park, exactly where it constructed its permanent residence, a red-brick Gothic Revival stone &quotmausoleum&quot developed by American architects Calvert Vaux and Jacob Wrey Mold. As of 2006, the Met measures virtually a quarter mile extended and occupies far more than two million square feet, far more than 20 instances the size of the original 1880 developing.

In 2007, the Metropolitan Museum of Art was ranked #17 on the AIA 150 America’s Favored Architecture list.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art was designated a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1967. The interior was designated in 1977.

Katyusha multiple rocket launchers (Russian: Катюша) are a variety of rocket artillery 1st built and fielded by the Soviet Union in Globe War II. Compared to other artillery, these a number of rocket launchers provide a devastating quantity of explosives to an location target swiftly, but with reduced accuracy and requiring a longer time to reload. They are fragile compared to artillery guns, but low-cost and effortless to produce. Katyushas of Planet War II, the initial self-propelled artillery mass-created by the Soviet Union,[1] have been typically mounted on trucks. This mobility gave Katyushas (and other self-propelled artillery) another advantage: being capable to provide a large blow all at after, and then move prior to becoming situated and attacked with counter-battery fire.

Katyusha weapons of Planet War II integrated the BM-13 launcher, light BM-8, and heavy BM-31. Today, the nickname is also applied to newer truck-mounted Soviet several rocket launchers—notably the frequent BM-21—and derivatives.

The nickname

Initially, the secrecy kept their military designation from being recognized by the soldiers who operated them. They have been known as by code names such as Kostikov Guns (soon after the head of the RNII), and finally classed as Guards Mortars.[2] The name BM-13 was only allowed into secret documents in 1942, and remained classified until right after the war.[three]

Since they have been marked with the letter K, for Voronezh Komintern Factory,[3] Red Army troops adopted a nickname from Mikhail Isakovsky’s well-known wartime song, Katyusha, about a girl longing for her absent beloved, who is away performing military service.[4] Katyusha is the Russian equivalent of Katie, an endearing diminutive form of the name Katherine: Yekaterina →Katya →Katyusha.

German troops coined the sobriquet Stalin’s organ (German: Stalinorgel), soon after Soviet leader Joseph Stalin for its visual resemblance to a church musical organ and alluding to the sound of the weapon’s rockets. They are known by the exact same name in Sweden. [4]

The heavy BM-31 launcher was also referred to as Andryusha (Андрюша, “Andrew”, endearing diminutive).[five]
Katyushas of Globe War II

Katyusha rocket launchers were mounted on many platforms throughout Globe War II, such as on trucks, artillery tractors, tanks, and armoured trains, as well as on naval and riverine vessels as assault support weapons.

The style was relatively simple, consisting of racks of parallel rails on which rockets had been mounted, with a folding frame to raise the rails to launch position. Each and every truck had in between 14 and 48 launchers. The 132-mm diameter M-13 rocket of the BM-13 method was 180 centimetres (70.9 in) long, 13.two centimetres (5.2 in) in diameter and weighed 42 kilograms (92 lb). Initially, the caliber was 130 mm, but the caliber was changed (very first the designation, and then the actual size), to keep away from confusing them with standard artillery shells[three]. It was propelled by a solid nitrocellulose-primarily based propellant of tubular shape, arranged in a steel-case rocket engine with a single central nozzle at the bottom finish. The rocket was stabilised by cruciform fins of pressed sheet steel. The warhead, either fragmentation, high-explosive or shaped-charge, weighed about 22 kg (48 lb). The range of the rockets was about five.four kilometres (3.four mi). Later, 82-mm diameter M-8 and 310-mm diameter M-31 rockets had been also developed.

The weapon is much less correct than traditional artillery guns, but is extremely effective in saturation bombardment, and was particularly feared by German soldiers. A battery of four BM-13 launchers could fire a salvo in 7–10 seconds that delivered 4.35 tons of higher explosives over a four-hectare (ten acres) effect zone.[two] With an effective crew, the launchers could redeploy to a new place instantly right after firing, denying the enemy the opportunity for counterbattery fire. Katyusha batteries had been frequently massed in very huge numbers to create a shock effect on enemy forces. The weapon’s disadvantage was the extended time it took to reload a launcher, in contrast to traditional guns which could sustain a continuous low rate of fire.

The sound of the rocket launching also was exclusive in that the constant &quotwoosh&quot sound that came from the firing of the rockets could be utilized for psychological warfare. The rocket’s devastating destruction also helped to lower the morale of the German army.

The rocket was stabilised by cruciform fins of pressed sheet steel. The warhead, either fragmentation, high-explosive or shaped-charge, weighed around 22 kg (48 lb). Combat history
BM-13 battery fire, during the Battle of Berlin, April 1945, with metal blast covers pulled over the windshields

The several rocket launchers have been leading secret in the starting of Globe War II. A unique unit of the NKVD secret police was raised to operate them.[two] On July 7, 1941, an experimental artillery battery of seven launchers was first utilized in battle at Orsha in Belarus, beneath the command of Captain Ivan Flyorov, destroying a station with numerous supply trains, and causing massive German Army casualties. Following the accomplishment, the Red Army organized new Guards Mortar batteries for the assistance of infantry divisions. A battery’s complement was standardized at four launchers. They remained beneath NKVD control till German Nebelwerfer rocket launchers became typical later in the war.[6]
A battery of BM-31 numerous rocket launchers in operation

On August 8, 1941, Stalin ordered the formation of eight Particular Guards Mortar regiments beneath the direct control of the Basic Headquarters Reserve (Stavka-VGK). Every single regiment comprised three battalions of 3 batteries, totalling 36 BM-13 or BM-eight launchers. Independent Guards Mortar battalions had been also formed, comprising 36 launchers in 3 batteries of twelve. By the finish of 1941, there have been eight regiments, 35 independent battalions, and two independent batteries in service, holding a total of 554 launchers.[11]

In June 1942 Heavy Guards Mortar battalions had been formed around the new M-30 static rocket launch frames, consisting of 96 launchers in three batteries. In July, a battalion of BM-13s was added to the establishment of a tank corps.[12] In 1944, the BM-31 was utilized in Motorized Heavy Guards Mortar battalions of 48 launchers. In 1943, Guards Mortar brigades, and later divisions, were formed equipped with static launchers.[11]

By the end of 1942, 57 regiments had been in service—together with the smaller independent battalions, this was the equivalent of 216 batteries: 21% BM-8 light launchers, 56% BM-13, and 23% M-30 heavy launchers. By the end of the war, the equivalent of 518 batteries have been in service.[11]
[edit] Katyushas since World War II
Russian forces use BM-27 rocket launchers during the Second Chechen War

The achievement and economy of numerous rocket launchers (MRL) have led them to continue to be developed. During the Cold War, the Soviet Union fielded several models of Katyushas, notably the BM-21 launchers fitting the stereotypical Katyusha mould, and the larger BM-27. Advances in artillery munitions have been applied to some Katyusha-kind numerous launch rocket systems, including bomblet submunitions, remotely-deployed land mines, and chemical warheads.

With the breakup of the Soviet Union, Russia inherited most of its military arsenal like the Katyusha rockets. In current history, they have been used by Russian forces in the course of the Initial and Second Chechen Wars and by Armenian and Azerbaijani forces for the duration of the Nagorno-Karabakh War. Georgian government forces are reported to have employed BM-21 or equivalent rocket artillery in fighting in the 2008 South Ossetia war.[13]

Katyushas have been exported to Afghanistan, Angola, Czechoslovakia, Egypt, East Germany, Hungary, Iran, Iraq, North Korea, Poland, Syria, and Vietnam. They have been also constructed in Czechoslovakia[14], People’s Republic of China, North Korea, and Iran.[citation required]

Katyushas also saw action in the Korean War, employed by the Chinese People’s Volunteer Army against the South and United Nations forces. Soviet BM-13s were identified to have been imported to China prior to the Sino-Soviet split and have been operational in the People’s Liberation Army.

Israel captured BM-24 MRLs during the Six-Day War (1967), utilised them in two battalions for the duration of the Yom Kippur War (1973) and the 1982 Lebanon War, and later developed the MAR-240 launcher for the same rockets, based on a Sherman tank chassis. For the duration of the 2006 Lebanon War, Hezbollah fired among three,970 and four,228 rockets, from light truck-mounts and single-rail man-transportable launchers. About 95% of these have been 122 mm (4.8 in) Syrian-manufactured Katyusha artillery rockets, which carried warheads up to 30 kg (66 lb) and had a variety of up to 30 km (19 mi).[15][16].[15][17][18] Hamas has launched 122-mm “Grad-kind Katyusha” rockets from the Gaza Strip against several cities in Israel,[19] although they are not reported to have truck-mounted launchers.

Katyushas have been also allegedly used by the Rwandan Patriotic Front in the course of its 1990 invasion of Rwanda, via the 1994 genocide. They have been powerful in battle, but translated into considerably anti-Tutsi sentiment in the regional media.[20]

It was reported that BM-21 launchers have been used against American forces for the duration of 2003 invasion of Iraq. They have also been utilized in the Afghanistan and Iraq insurgencies. In Iraq, according to Related Press and Agence France-Presse reports, Katyusha rockets were fired at the Green Zone late March 2008.[21][22]

Sancai is a common kind of ceramics making use of 3 intermingled colors in Tang Dynasty. Although Sancai actually signifies &quotthree colors&quot, the colors of the glazes employed to decorate the wares of the Tang Dynasty generally had been not limited to three.

Sancai wares were northern wares produced using white and buff-firing secondary kaolins and fire clays. At kiln web sites positioned at Tongchuan, Neiqui county in Hebei and Gongxian in Henan, the clays utilised for burial wares were related to those utilized by Tang potters. The burial wares had been fired at a reduced temperature than contemporaneous whitewares. Burial wares, such as the nicely-identified representations of camels and horses, had been cast in sections, in moulds with the components luted collectively utilizing clay slip. In some cases, a degree of individuality was imparted to the assembled figurines by hand-carving.

Lovely Bronze – Bronze Sculpture In Ancient And Contemporary Instances

Though most cultures have a history of producing bronze sculptures, it was the ancient Greeks who are credited with the initial life-size bronze figures. At first beating the bronze into shape and welding pieces collectively, the Greeks later refined the bronze sculpture method by making a clay model, lining it with wax and then a second layer of clay. The molten bronze was then poured in, which melted the wax and left a uniform bronze piece in the preferred shape. Modern bronze sculptors have taken the Greek notion of massive-size art to new heights, with impressively-sized bronze sculptures. Completed bronze can also be gilded, a process identified as ormulu. Renowned bronze sculptors by means of history incorporated Donatello, Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, Giambologna (Giovanni da Bologna) and Benvenuto Cellini.

Bronze, an easily molded, sturdy and visually appealing material, has been utilized by civilized man for a lot more than 5,500 years. According to archaeological finds, though bronze was initially utilised in the making of weapons and household items, it was quickly discovered that the material produced unparalleled art. Archaeological proof shows that bronze initial appeared in Iran, Iraq and Turkey around three,500 BCE (just before the present era), followed by India (3,300 BCE) and concurrently, China and Europe (about two,one hundred BCE).

Bronze is an alloy of copper with one more material, generally tin, even though other components, including phosphorous, aluminum or silicon, may also be employed. Bronze has the exclusive top quality of expanding slightly as it cools. This tends to make it perfect for pouring into molds, as it “grows” to fill in really delicate specifics inside the mold, lending a realistic appearance.

Even though most cultures have a history of generating bronze sculptures, it was the ancient Greeks who are credited with the very first life-size bronze figures. At 1st beating the bronze into shape and welding pieces collectively, the Greeks later refined the bronze sculpture approach by generating a clay model, lining it with wax and then a second layer of clay. Nails have been inserted to brace the model. The molten bronze was then poured in, which melted the wax and left a uniform bronze piece in the preferred shape. The clay was then be chipped away to reveal a hollow, reasonably lightweight statue. This procedure, called the lost-wax approach, is nevertheless in use right now, though a assortment of refinements have been made.

For a solid bronze sculpture, wax is employed for most of the internal portion of the model. Most artists will start with a production model in case the molten approach fails and the procedure must be began over again. Contemporary bronze sculptors have taken the Greek concept of huge-size art to new heights, with impressively-sized bronze sculptures. These are frequently created in pieces, transported to the final location and welded on the spot.

After the desired shape is obtained and the outer layer chipped out, the bronze sculpture is polished. Some artists use a patina rubbed on the outdoors of the sculpture, which outcomes in a selection of colour and sheen level effects. Finished bronze can also be gilded, a procedure known as ormulu.

Popular bronze sculptors via history included Donatello, Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, Giambologna (Giovanni da Bologna) and Benvenuto Cellini. Bronze sculptors of the modern era incorporate Henry Moore, Leonard Wells Volk, Harry Webber, Bill Toma and John W. Mills.
